Taster Session Improv

Thursday 6th March, 19.00-21.00h
GZ Buchegg, Pavillion building, Bucheggstr. 93

A fun and playful taster session for newbies in a supportive & playful atmosphere. After some group warmups we will play improv games.
Perfect as an intro to the Level 1 course, which starts one week later!
Session starts at 7.00pm. Please be there 5 minutes before.

Cost: 30 CHF (Students & Kulturlegi: 20 CHF)

 

Level 1 - Basics of Improv (Improv Elementary)

7x Thursdays, 19.00 - 21.15h
13th March - 24th April

Location: Pavillon Building of the GZ Buchegg, Bucheggplatz, Zurich
Teacher: Bernie & Mary

No previous experience required.
This class covers the basics of improv and is all about playful discovery.
Perfect if you want to give improv a go and have fun, develop self-confidence, teamwork and creativity.
Get to know a group of like-minded friendly beginners.

You will learn and practise:

  • creativity & playfulness

  • confidence on stage ("there is no wrong")

  • emotional intelligence in a scenic relationship

  • build solid beginnings to good improv scenes

  • successfully develop an idea with a partner

  • simple short form improv games, as seen in Theatersports shows

Upon completion of this class you can continue with Level 2.

Level 2 - The Impro Scene (Improv Intermediate)

8x Tuesdays, 18.00 - 20.00 h
4th March - 25th April

Location: GZ Buchegg, Pavillon

Showcase:

For Level 1 graduates or for people with some previous theatre experience.
Here we specifically work on the dynamics of the improv scene and learn a Keith Johnstone approach.
We review and practise the building blocks of a successful scene.

Students can participate in a public show at the end - take the fun to a new level!

  • Playing with status

  • Emotional dynamics (being affected)

  • Tilts and reversals

  • Backline support

  • Theatre games (“short form games”)

Level 3 - Advanced Scenework & Intro Long Form (Improv High)

7x Mondays, 19.00 - 21.00 h
3rd March - 14th April

Location: QR Bullinger, Bullingerstr. 8, Zurich

Showcase:

This class is for people who have been playing improv for some time (at least 4-5 months of regular practice).
We explore & train some important improv techniques (UCB-Approach, Game of the Scene), and see how comedy works.
We also delve into premise-based long form improv, ie. comedic ideas pulled from an input.

Level 4 - Long Form (Improv College & Uni)

8x Tuesdays 20.00-22.00h
4th March - 25th April

Showcase:

This class is all about long form improvisation. Level 3 or similar is a prerequisite.
There will be a showcase where students can perform.

Storylabor Guest Teacher 2025: Patti Stiles

Easter Weekend 2025 (April 18-21)

Patti is an actor, director, author, teacher and longtime collaborator of Keith Johnstone. Her understanding of Johnstone’s work and philosophy, combined with her own discoveries and her wealth of experience on the world impro stage, has made her a “must have” teacher for performers and companies worldwide wishing to create spontaneous theatre with fine skill, strong narrative, heart and elegant style.

You can book one or several days with Patti.
The program will be different each day, with some overlap.
Friday & Saturday are for people with less experience.
Sunday & Monday are for people with at least one year of improv experience.

About our classes / Terms & Conditions

Our students are mostly non-native English speakers.
You don’t need to be “funny” (but you may discover that you actually are…). Improv is a team activity where all kinds of personal qualities complement each other.
Average class size is 8-14 people. Regular attendance is encouraged to improve learning and group cohesion.
You can skip single sessions, but as a rule of thumb, you should be able to attend at least 75% of a course.
No discounts for partial attendance.
If a class does not reach the minimum participant number, it will be cancelled and you will be refunded.
Refunds due to illness require a medical certificate.
